Solo Piano

I often played solo piano passages as if I assumed that the audience wanted a lecture on classical or romantic era cadenza practices. I played jazz in the style of Rachmaninoff without telling anybody. My harmonic movements are so rooted in the past. I got an F in classical piano my first semester in college. That didn't stop me from studying the masters and continuing to incorporate all those ideas in my jazz playing. My teachers misunderstood me. I didn't want to duplicate the past. I wanted to understand it and incorporate it into jazz. My goal was to compose in real time and execute with the precision and dynamic control of Glenn Gould. - LYLE
