Bob Moses

Bob Moses had a colorful way to describe his conception of the big band. In his world, a good big band needed three types of creatures, worker bees, drones and spirit voices. Bob wrote and hired that way too. The worker bees (mostly rhythm section players in Bob's model) moved things along and provided the propulsion, the drones just played their parts accurately and stayed out of the way, the spirit voices sprinkled magic fairy dust over things whenever they chose to speak.  Bob was very fun to work with, deeper than people give him credit for and he pegged both Frisell and me as spirit voices. He never asked us to play rhythm section parts, merely to comment on what we were hearing. Playing with Bob Moses felt like an acid trip you could take while completely sober. - LYLE
